How to Calculate AI Voice Agent ROI
Build a realistic voice AI ROI model using eligible calls, successful outcomes, full costs, avoided work and revenue contribution.
Define the eligible workload
Start with call intents the agent is actually allowed and able to handle. Exclude complex, sensitive or unsupported conversations rather than assuming all call volume is automatable.
Estimate contact rate, valid conversations and completion separately. For outbound programmes, dial attempts are not the same as connected customer conversations.
Build the full cost side
Include usage and the work needed to operate quality.
- Telephony, platform, speech, model and voice usage.
- Numbers, concurrency and transfer minutes.
- Implementation and integration.
- Monitoring, language review and prompt maintenance.
- Human handling for transferred or failed calls.
- Taxes and currency assumptions.
Value the outcome conservatively
For support, value correctly resolved work and reduced wait or after-hours coverage. For sales, use the historical value of a qualified, attended next step—not the full potential revenue of every conversation.
Include avoided repeat calls and better staff utilization only where measurement supports them. Do not count the same benefit twice.
Use scenarios and a release gate
Model conservative, expected and upside completion rates. Compare monthly benefit minus monthly cost, then divide by total investment for the chosen ROI period.
During the pilot, replace assumptions with observed completion, transfer and cost data. Continue only when outcome quality and risk meet the agreed threshold.
Frequently asked questions
What is the basic AI voice-agent ROI formula?
For a chosen period, subtract total voice-AI costs from attributable benefits, then divide the result by total voice-AI investment.
Which volume should be used in the model?
Use eligible calls and successful outcomes, separating dial attempts, connected calls, valid conversations and completed tasks.
What costs are often missed?
Teams may omit telephony, transfers, integrations, monitoring, language review, maintenance and human handling of exceptions.
